AI Can Create a Family Photo.
But It Can't Preserve Your Family's Story.
A few years ago, I photographed this family when their second baby was still so little.
Recently, we met again on a quiet beach in Broulee just after sunrise.
That tiny baby was now running around with endless confidence. Her big brother had grown into such a cheeky, funny little person. Watching them all together, I couldn't help but think how quickly these seasons of life pass.
It also got me thinking about something I've been hearing more and more lately.
"Will AI replace family photographers?"
The truth is, AI is incredible.
It can generate beautiful family portraits in seconds. Perfect smiles. Perfect light. Perfect locations.
But what it can't generate is a memory.
It doesn't know that your daughter always reaches for your hand when the waves get a little too big.
It doesn't notice your son throwing his head back in laughter after telling the world's worst joke.
It can't hear the conversations, the giggles, or the little traditions that make your family yours.
Those aren't things you can type into a prompt.
They're moments that happen because you're living them.
And those are the moments worth remembering.
A Photograph Is More Than an Image
When people book a family session, they're often thinking about updating the photos on their walls.
And yes, I absolutely want to create artwork you'll love looking at every day.
But I'm also creating something much more valuable.
I'm preserving a feeling.
Years from now, you probably won't look at these photos and think about what everyone was wearing.
You'll remember how cold the water was that winter morning.
How your son insisted on collecting shells instead of looking at the camera.
How your children couldn't stop laughing as they chased each other along the shoreline.
Photographs have this incredible ability to transport us back to moments we thought we'd forgotten.
That's their real magic.
Why I Keep Photographing Families
One of the greatest privileges of this job is watching families grow.
I meet babies, then photograph them as toddlers.
Toddlers become school kids.
Families welcome new siblings.
Parents who once carried their children now walk beside them.
When you place galleries from different years next to each other, you don't just see how much everyone has changed.
You remember who they were.
That's something no AI image can ever give you.
Because it wasn't there.
It didn't witness your story unfolding.
That's the Difference
Technology will keep evolving, and AI will become even more impressive.
But my job has never been to create a perfect picture.
It's to notice the little things you'll miss one day.
The way your child reaches for your hand without thinking.
The look your partner gives you when nobody else is watching.
The wind in your hair, sandy feet, belly laughs, and all the beautifully ordinary moments that quietly become the memories you treasure most.
Those moments only happen once.
My job is simply to make sure you never forget them.
Because in twenty years' time, these photographs won't just remind you what your family looked like.
They'll remind you exactly what it felt like to be there.
And that's something no algorithm will ever be able to recreate.
